24/11/2006 @ 12:12 (GMT) Sometimes people just shock you. You expect one thing from them, and then they do something completely different. My recent shock was from someone I've not heard from (although i've seen her around from time to time) in over twelve years. I've thought about quite a bit since I left school as she was a major part in my life, but didn't think I've ever get to talk to her again. Anyways, the other day I had an email come through from friendsreunited (yes I signed up a while ago, I know - I'm sad) saying I had a PM from this person. I was shocked - so I logged on to read it. It wasn't anything special, by the looks of things just a generic 'hi' message she might have sent to a few people (although I could be wrong about that). As I'm not signed up for their premium service (you would have thought they would have made their money through ads instead) I couldn't reply to her message, and had to resort to updating my profile to tell her to contact me (a quick message directly to her and my email address sorted so that friendsreunited didn't block it usually does the trick). Well today I'm off, and I decided to do a bit of investigation work. A look over her full friendsreunited profile showed she liked myspace. So I headed over to myspace and started profile searching. After a long slog I hit paydirt, the same information in her profile as on friendsreunited. So then I click to PM her through the site - I've got to be logged on, gah. I hate myspace because of the nature of it, but I decided to knock up an account anyway (yes I know, I'm a sell out, go sue me), so I could PM the girl. So now i'm waiting for an email to come through (that?s if she wants to talk to me, and if myspace haven't blocked email addresses in PMs). You've got to love technology though, and fear the people who know how to use it properly. With only a few details (that she probably didn't think twice about) I could track down her details without paying and find out a lot more information about her - spooky if I was a stalker! In other news, I've just spent two days down in the furthest reaches of London training people on my company's Internet based search/portal system. First time i've done training at this level (other stuff was teaching students) and it was a complicated mix of techs and non-techs. I think we got through it ok though - and i've got more experience in that area. Plus it's going to look good on my C.V! ---------- 14/11/2006 @ 19:37 (GMT) Due to the amount of hassle I've had with spammers recently, I've put some security it to stop them from messing up the site. This isn't perfect by any means, but it should let less bots through. Unfortunately this is also going to mean that some correct shouts by people aren't going to get through either. If you a trying a shout and it isn't getting through, please contact me and let me know what you were trying to send so I can change the program. The above also applies if you see spam in the shoutbox, please let me know so I can adjust the code. ---------- 14/11/2006 @ 09:00 (GMT) Warm and dry! That's what I was thinking when riding home the other day on the bike in the soaking mist that managed to settle between my work and home. Last weekend I took a trip with the better half and parents to the UK Motorcycle show. My mission, to pick up as much kit as I could, at the cheapest price. As fate would have it, I didn't do too badly either. My aim was to buy a full set of leathers (for the summer), a pair of boots (all weather), a Sat-Nav, a set of waterproof trousers and a backpack. What I actually came back with was a full set of leathers (£135), a pair of boots (£50), a set of waterproof trousers (£30), a pair of glasses (£10), another helmet (for the other half, (£30)) and a jacket for the other half (pink, and £60). It was a good day out for bargains, but I don't think I?d do it again unless I needed a lot of kit, there wasn't much to see, and even the 'show girls' weren't much to look at. I've been working on my Flash skills as well as biking recently so I've got some plans for this site as well. I'm thinking of ditching the navbar at the top as it's getting old and building another type of navigation. This one would be changeable using XML I've also got my motorbike theory test booked now, so fingered crossed I pass! ---------- 29/10/2006 @ 10:17 (GMT) Well it's started, my shoutbox is now getting spammed. The trouble is there isn't much I can do about it as the shouts work as they should do, people are entering the correct data into the boxes. If it continues i'll have to build some bot-busting stuff in there, but thats going to inconvenience everyone else who uses it. Not much is happening in the tech-world of mine right now, apart from a competition I'm running over at PlanetAMD64 to win a set of IceMat In:Ear headphones. Anyone can sign up for it and all you've got to do is be registered on the forums with at least one post because the closing date. Check it out here Last night we had a halloween party which was good fun. I had my first go at apple bobbing and managed to come last, but it was an experience at least. Next weekend is the UK Motorbike show at the Birmingham NEC, which should be great fun - and I can get some cheap kit for the bike! ---------- 02/10/2006 @ 11:32 (GMT) Ok - so I bet you're wondering, WTF happened to the site?! Did some crazy girl cracker come in and deface it? Did my better half threaten to remove 'special' cuddles until I changed the colour scheme? Luckily for me, the answer is 'no' - it is all part of the drive to make Breast Cancer aware in October. You can read all about the disease and the 'Pink for October' drive here and go blame them if you find the site harder to read! In tech news, my review of the OCZ Dual-SD card is now complete at PlanetX64 and you can read all about it there. The new website 'should' be up and running soon (yes I know i've been saying that for ages), but i've done some speed testing on it, and it is a bit faster than this box ----------
