Happy birthday to me! Well for yesterday anyway, I got some cool things including some Karma Sutra playing cards, some miniature games (pool, bowling, table tennis), a huge book of computer games (memories..!) and of course my wireless router. It wasn't a bad day, I had another phone call from Jody (these calls must be costing you a fortune!) but I spent most of the day trying to get the router working correctly (it just did not want to be a pass through device with the other router) and getting an AGP 8x card to work in a 4x slot (I must have swapped about 4 graphics cards in different machines before I got a combination that worked). I was supposed to be getting an email from a friend I knew ages ago (bumped into her in a restaurant) but got nothing (where is it Lucy?!) so that was a bit disappointing, but overall it wasn't a bad day (stupid hardware though, so annoying). Today has been ok, Adam has moved back into the house for a week or so, so he can look for a house around Cheltenham and not have to get up at 6:30 every morning to travel to work so that?s nice to have him back, and now I'm going to start work on sorting out this java blog program so that its much more flexible!

I'm so tired! I can't blame anyone but myself though, too many late nights and then not sleeping well as I'm not in my own bed. I'm just glad I bought my duvet with me, I just don't sleep well in anyone else's! This morning's wake up was a phone call from a friend's dad (Thank you for contacting him for me Jen!) who's a mechanic, and who?s done all of my cars on many occasions. I've been asking him to have a look at my car for a few days now (The wheel bearing needed doing, and there was what looked like to be oil in the header tank). Well this morning he had time to fit me in, so I trundled up there half asleep for him to check it out for me. Well two and a half hours later the wheel bearing was done (it was a nightmare) and he had a look at the engine after that. Luckily he thinks I don't have an engine problem and the black stuff in there is just really old anti-freeze. A quick coolant flush through later (that old stuff *really* smelled) and then engine is clean again. You have to love him. Only set me back £60 as well! If you're in the Swindon area and you want a good mechanic look him up, Gary Middleton. He's an agricultural engineer though, so he does farm things too, so make sure you book early. Oh, and in case you're wondering, he runs a complete business and garage, so this isn't some lone guy who comes around to your house to do some bodge jobs! And the wireless kit turned up today. The USB adaptor feels very cheap, which is annoying considering it was expensive. The drivers for it were a nightmare too, but its all working now...yay! However I've just realised that I'm going to be using the adaptor only in USB 1.1 ports so the transfer speed is going to be slow, and I could have bought a 802.11b instead of a 802.11g device and saved myself some money...doh!

Today's been a long day! Firstly I went running in the pouring rain, spoke to some one about doing a website for his band (which has pictures of topless girls on the photo's section!!), got my hair cut (very short now!) and had lunch with a friend, amongst other things. Then I went all the way across to my grandparents to see my uncle and cousins who I've not seen in ages! And my god, they're so big! They're 18 and 16 now, and I remember when they were barely walking, it makes me seem sooooo old! Hopefully tomorrow the car is getting fixed (stupid little thing) and my wireless kit is turning up. Sod waiting for my birthday, I'm playing with it when it arrives! To finish the Overclockers story on PlanetAMD64.com I mentioned yesterday, they eventually sent me the correct parts, which worked in my system. Unfortunately the power adaptor for the fan on the new card doesn't work with my special cooling system I bought for the card, so I'm a bit annoyed another £20 is down the drain for hardware I can't use. Oh well, I get wireless soon so I can play with that, and the graphics card to make my media centre silent is coming too! And I just got an email from my old tutor saying she'd worked out my degree results too, and she's worked out I got a 2.1, so after the official moderators and results are done on the 22nd of April I will hopefully have a 2.1 Honours degree in Computing and Multimedia, yay!

I've been everywhere today! Running, and then around loads of computer shops looking for a mice for my mother, with my parents. And what did we do? Spend about three hours looking around the shops, and then go home and order it all online. I've been ordering things online now ever since I found out I could, and there are plusses and minuses. If you ignore the problem of security (not really an issue if you know what you're doing) you get cheaper stuff (usually by a large amount) and you don't even have to leave your house. But there are a large number of things that you miss out on if you order online. Number one is someone to talk to face to face. Unless you're lucky enough to live right next to the store you're ordering from, you won't be ever looking into the eyes of the person you're buying from, so without the research yourself, you'll never know if the object you're buying is any good. Not worried about that? Good, you shouldn't be, as anyone who buys anything should do some research before hand so they know what they need. So ignoring the purchasing support, what else are you missing out on from purchasing in an actual shop? Well two major things. The first is actually being able to physically play with the item before you buy it. The amount of people I know that have bought something online and then its been completely different than they've expected it to be when it arrived, I've even done it myself a few times. The second thing, and probably the most important in my mind is having someone to yell at if something goes wrong. I recently had a dispute with an online company called Overclockers UK. You can read about it on PlanetAMD64.com. Some parts I bought had gone wrong and I had to contact them to send them back for replacement. It took me three days to get a hold of them, and when they did send me replacement parts they were the wrong ones. It took well over a month to eventually get the parts replaced, and that was only after I took legal action against them. The problem wasn't that they refused to replace the wrong parts, but I just could not get a hold of them, they don't use email anymore and the phone was always engaged. They even didn't respond to a letter I sent them by post. If I had bought from a shop like PCworld, I could have just walked in there and had it sorted out right away. So what do you do? Well personally I still like buying things online. Its much cheaper and at the moment I don't have much money at all. I've found you can't get everything, but you can get a lot. Firstly ask yourself how much you're spending, and what would you do if things go wrong? If your answer is to take it back to the company, read on. If your answer is that you'd throw it away, then by all means, buy the cheapest you can! If you're going to send it back, then first research on review sites how good online shops are, Overclockers UK it turns out has terrible reviews. After you've got a few sites with good reviews, then go looking at which ones have the best prices. Watch the VAT and shipping charges though. And if you had a good experience with a shop after you've had something go wrong, post a review on the review sites, so we all know who the good companies are! Oh, and if you're interested, I bought a Passive heatsink for my Media Centre (watch out for a guide for that soon) and a USB 802.11g networking device, to go with the 802.11g router I got for my birthday...YAY!

For the past few days, I've been getting these phone calls on my mobile from a really weird number. It starts in a "+" so I know its from abroad, but apart from that I had no idea who it could have been. Well today I found out! It was my friend Jody from Canada (a pic of her is in the pictures section) who kept me guessing who it was until I got it right! So if you read this Jody, THANK YOU for ringing, it was a great supprise!
