It seems as though I'm just blasting the blogs out recently. This one poses a rhetorical question. "Don't you just hate it when things end?". I do. I spent most of my youth in change, my father was in the armed forces so I had to leave everything I knew every three years or so. Friends, homes, toys, and sometimes even country's left for another three years at least. Well, not friends or homes, I never could go back to those. Anyways back to the point, a close friend and I have just broken up. We weren't getting along well at all, fights and things all of the time and recently we came across something that we just couldn't get past. So instead of just fading out, we decided to sit down and talk about it. And at the end of the convo we just decided that this wasn't working and we should end it. It was a teary goodbye, neither of us wanting to go, but there is only so much flogging a dead donkey you can do before you realise that it isn't not going to move anymore. So to my special friend. I love you, night night.

*Sigh* Another day of computer hell. Last night my computer decided to throw a complete fit and die on me. And it wasn't one of these "I'll reboot a few times and pretend the RAID array is damaged" fits, although they are bad enough, it was a "Lets bump off one of the RAM sticks" fit. Consequently I spent most of the night running Memtest86 trying to find out if the problem lay in RAM or not. From the first look it seems RAM was the problem, and I spent all night worrying about fixing the PC. I woke up this morning and Memtest was still running (although I was sure I left the PC unplugged) and surprise surprise, all of the tests had passed with no problems. So now I was stumped. The overnight tests were run on stock settings, so the problem had to be in the timings right? So I boosted the voltage of the RAM to 2.8v and tried again. More problems. So I lowered the timings from 2-3-2-5 to 2-3-3-7. Nope still problems. So I tried 2.5-3-3-7, which worked. Now I'm confused. Anyways, to cut a long story short, The PC eventually worked, and just as I was getting used to having slower timings, it died again. Cursing the dammed thing I ripped out one of the sticks of RAM and tested it on its own. It worked ok, so I tested the second stick. This seemed to work ok, but after a few tests it died and showed me all of the faults. I tested it on a few timings and it repeatedly died. So I replaced it with the first stick and blasted it with tests. And the first stick passed with no problems. So there's the answer - a faulty stick of RAM. God knows how it died (heat?) but it is being packed off to Ebuyer in the morning anyways. You have to give credit to Ebuyer, they must have an automated RMA number system, as I applied for an RMA which was waiting to be approved, and 30 mins later it was accepted and I got an RMA. Hopefully they'll be able to get me a decent stick of RAM back soon, my system does not like Windows XP64 with only 512MB, its getting slower than my laptop!

Ok since the webcast the other night I"ve been thinking about a play on "The Raven" poem by Edgar Allan Poe, for the launch of the dual-core processor. And this is the best I"ve come up with, with the help of Clare. I"m no poet so apologies if it doesn"t quite follow the structure of the original poem, or quite rhyme properly, but if anyone has any suggestions as how to improve it, let me know!

Once upon a morning dreary, I was awakened weak and weary,
By my PC"s speakers loudly bleeping that "mail - you have some more".
While deleting spam porn adverts, suddenly I saw an email,
a pm loaded with much detail, detail than I"d seen before.
"Tis not possible!", I muttered, "Who does want my help some more?"
.....Quoth the email, ?PlanetAmd64?

I fired up my default browser, pointed at the pm linking,
not clicking on the spyware I was trying to ignore.
Twas a link of formatted coding - which I clicked with much foreboding,
and waited while the page was loading, loading info to explore.
It said "AMD shoutcast at eleven", and I questioned what was in store,
....Quoth the threading, "Launch of Dual-Core"

So I sat there for members; coming into the chatroom we had not paid for,
Coming to chat with the team; how dual core systems are supreme,
And then shoutcast started quickly, promising surprises for us and more.
But we were certain, behind the curtain, was something hidden than just decor,
....Quoth the inquirer "CEO"s jamming guitar hardcore"

And while I was at it, I thought I"d post the "porn" version of the poem I found a while ago, I thought it was funny back then, and its still funny now.

Once upon a midnight dreary
While i porn surfed
Weak and weary
Over many a strange and spurious site of " hot xxx galore".
While i clicked my fav"rite bookmark, suddenly there came a warning,
and my heart was filled with mourning
mourning for my dear amour!
" "Tis not possible!", i muttered, " Give me back my free hardcore!"
..... quoth the server, 404

For many a quaint and curious website of X-rated lore
Found the server nearly napping
http replies a-slacking
Though my loins were filled with burning, yearning for a teenage whore
And as I paused awhile in hope that service be restored -
....Quoth the server, "404."

I resisted strange and lurid websites of hot sex galore,
But my curiosity grew stronger; hesitating then no longer,
I gave in and clicked the link to see what waited there in store.
And with the clicking, came the ticking, of the page that was no more
.....Quoth the server, "404"

*Yawn* another morning, another day for exercise. This morning started slightly differently that the others though with a letter appearing at my door. Now as all of my letters are forwarded to my parent"s house I wondered what this one could be. Then I remembered that I had given the Police this address when I reported the people hitting my car, and for my application form. So I held my breath and opened the envelope. Unfortunately it wasn"t my application form, but another questionnaire for me to fill out about the car incident. Oh well, I just hope I"ve still got the other driver"s registration details still. While I"m on the subject of the Police, The Register reported today that once again, the UK Police are having problems coping with internet and computer crime, this time focusing on internet paedophiles. Hopefully this will mean that they demand more officers be recruited to help with the load, especially officers with computing skills like me. I still don"t understand why they don"t have a fast track course for specialised officers who spend the majority of their training working in that specialised area. It would allow them to get a lot more help where it is needed, in a very short space of time, and would encourage more people with computing skills to join the force. I understand the argument of "you need to be able to walk before you can run", meaning you need core skills before you can specialise, but they are missing out on so many trained and skilled people because of it. You can read the article here http://www.theregister.co.uk/2005/04/22/uk_police_internet/ Right, running time for me.

WindowBlinds DesktopWell after another day of fiddling with the site I"ve made some more additions to it. Firstly I"ve reconfigured the controller to add some more security from malformed URLs, although this still isn"t perfect. I"ve also completed the Academic work page, where you will be able to download past computing Academic work I have done. Currently it is only my University work that is going to be available, but I will be adding some of my HND work eventually too. The academic page will hopefully be up tomorrow, I"ve got to upload the work to the web server, remove all of my names, courses, addresses and anything else personal I"ve left on each piece, add the submenu to the navigation bar and lock down the directory it sits in, so that people can"t just leach all of the work. On the computing front, I would like to thank StarDock for freely donating the use of WindowBlinds to PlanetAmd64 for the use of our skinning contest. This means I get a free copy of the software which I decided to try out today. WindowBlinds itself is a nice piece of software, letting you change all of the bars and colours in Windows using themes. I"ve got one of the default themes installed and I quite like the look on the desktop now. I tried WindowBlinds a while ago but back then I remember it having a huge memory footprint. Not anymore, its quite small, taking about 5MB of memory up and I"ve had it running all day. One of their other utilities I"m using is called Objectdock and it basically is a small animated tray replacement which looks just like the Mac OS X taskbar. Its a cute little thing that can be skinned like WindowBlinds and although the free version doesn"t allow you to view the system tray *grumble* its still a nice little thing. You can see my current desktop with WindowBlinds and ObjectDock running to the left of this blog, and the full image in the pictures section
