1/6/2005 @ 22:53 (GMT) My review of the OCZ ModStream is now complete! You can read all about it here. ModStream review ---------- 1/6/2005 @ 1:7 (GMT) Today went from bad to worse. I woke up this morning to find a letter waiting for me. It was the police to say my application was rejected this time - due to me not giving them exactly the right answers they were looking for on the application. I needed three B's and I got two B's and two D's. So now I've got to wait another six months before reapplying - great. I then spent the day fitting the ModStream to my main rig for testing. I got all of the cabling nicely done and turned it on to see how well it performed. To be frank - it is shocking, much worse than my old cheap power supply. The +12v rail won't go above 12.86 on a good day, and generally sits around 11.73, although even under stress it won't go below that. If that was the only problem it had I wouldn't mind too much - but my mouse keeps locking up sometimes on the screen now and the PC seems to freeze much more than it did before - although it hasn't crashed yet. Unfortunately I've already ripped out the fans from the old PSU in order to put them back in this case - so I'm not taking it all to bit again, I'll just have to suffer for now and hope it doesn't lock up under gaming or crash completely. From what I've been reading in other forums this power supply is known to have a weak +12v rail, so at least my unit isn't the only one - although that doesn't make me feel any better. I'll be putting the review of it up on the site soon. Fingers crossed the Antec one will come soon and it'll have decent adjustable rails that will get this rig up and working again - although after using the cabling of the ModStream I don't know if I will be able to go back to a standard power supply. ---------- 28/5/2005 @ 20:31 (GMT) Its live! I've finally managed to get enough content and sort out enough of the site to get it live on the internet - yay! All PlanetAMD64.com users - would you please pop over to the contact page and throw me a quick email to say you've been? That would be appreciated! In house news - the French housemate decided not to pay me - but after one huge fight later and me nearly arresting her for assault - I got the money. She's gone back to France now, thank god. I've started my review of the two Antec cases - and I'm a bit disappointed with them. The Minuet II requires half-height cards (Antec didn't mention that they require half height brackets too though) which caused a few problems during testing, and I couldn't fully test installation with the Aria - as Antec have put the power supply directly above the CPU heatsink - and because I've got a large heatsink in the test system, it won't fit. The new ModStream has turned up as well - so I'll get chance to test that out on Monday, hopefully this one won't blow up on me as well. As for the Star Wars film - I didn't like it. It was an amazing film but I like it when the good guy wins and everything works out - this film was very dark and evil (I know they had to do it to set it up for the next film, but still). In the site I've added my old sites to the content, a review of the MSI Neo-FISR motherboard, and tidied up some CSS problems. Coming soon - the Antec case reviews! ---------- 24/5/2005 @ 17:21 (GMT) Well I'm back from Surrey and it has been a long couple of days. I arrived back here on the Sunday - ready to shoot off to my parents for a couple of days and to start the ModStream review when my French housemate informed me that she would be moving out on Wednesday. As nearly all of the bills for the house are in my name and I wasn't coming back until Wednesday myself I had to reduce the trip into a single day - drive back, pick up the two PSUs, see a friend and then pop back up here. While I was at the friends house I thought I'd open up the PSUs to see how good they actually were (he's a geek too) and to be honest I was a bit disappointed in them. The ModStream had a few minor issues with it (you can read all about it in the review coming soon) and the Enermax's cabling was a bit of a mess. Never mind I thought - so I took them both home and plugged in the ModStream. SPARK - crackle and it's dead. I tried it in a different machine and same results - £100 PSU dead. After panicking a bit I contacted OCZ who were great about the whole thing - they're sending me a brand new one straight away. In the mean time I can keep this model they've sent me, which is great as it saves me sending it back to America for RMA. Now I've just got to find a use for it (anyone want a £100 paper weight?!) although I think I'm going to strip it out and use the huge blue fan in it for something. You have to love the OCZ tech support guy though - he suggested I rip it out and use it for water-cooling! Anyways, I get back here on Sunday and start sorting the accounts for the housemate. By today I've got them all sorted and I go to see her about paying me. She owes me for the internet and phone line (they're both 12 month contracts so we all have to pay them regardless if we're using them or not) so I ask her to pay for the remainder of the contract. She refuses, claiming she's not paying as she's not going to be here. I explain no-one is going to be in the house as the contract runs out well after everyone moves out - but as there is a large cancellation fee for stopping the services (we've had them under 12 months) it is not worth cancelling everything - we might as just pay them until they expire and then cancel them. She refuses again and so I have to get into a large argument about her paying me. To top it off when one of my other housemates gets back I explain the situation to him and he takes her side! Things calmed down a bit though as the second housemate agreed with me (although he was not happy with paying the extra) after I explained the situation. I've just got to get the first housemate (the French one) to pay up the money by the morning or I'm going to be £50 out of pocket. In geek news - I'm going back to the parents place again tomorrow (now you see why I was going to stay there) as the two Antec cases have turned up for review (yay!) and I'm going to watch the last Starwars episode with Jen (thank you for paying!!) - I'll let you know how it goes! ---------- 20/5/2005 @ 19:42 (GMT) What a couple of days. Perky decided (right in the middle of a toy shop!) that she wanted a hamster for a pet again. So off we go to the pet shop (with me thinking she's joking) to get one. And we're standing in there playing with the hamsters and Perky picks one up to hold it. Let me set the scene here - the hamster is being held about 4 foot from the ground, it's a solid concrete floor underneath it with no carpet. Well you can guess what happens next. Yup - you've guessed it, the hamster jumps. 4 foot down and not a scratch on it, which is lucky for us as that's the one Perky decided to have. We named her "trouble" as she is a complete handful - sleeping in the play tube instead of in her bed - getting herself hurt on the wheel that was in her cage (it's been removed now) and making really loud snoring sounds when she's sleeping, but even I must admit - she is really cute! Notice anything different about the site? That?s right - no more Google ads. Why? Because Google decided that the clicks I've been getting on the site have been invalid. The only reason I can come up with for this decision from them is that because the site isn't live yet there have only been a few people clicking the links. They've recorded only a few IPs and so assumed that it was robots or a gang doing the clicking and so banned me. The worst part is that they didn't even ask me what was going on - they just banned me and waited for me to contact them. They're still hosting ads on my site (who gets paid for them?) and no amount of emails from me is going to make them change their minds apparently. So I've decided that it is not worth the extra hassle of arguing with them or going through the procedures to pretend to be someone else to get another Google account and am just going to leave them off for now - it's Google's loss. Anyways - I'm back from Surrey in a few days, so I can finally get a look at this ModStream, it's meant to be amazing! ----------
