17/10/2005 @ 22:26 (GMT) The water-cooling arrived! And it is a complete nightmare. Due to having already built a water-cooling kit before I thought I would have little problems with this one, how wrong I was. Nothing seems to connect to the pump, the tubing won?t bend, the GFX cooler won?t fit and when I do hack it to fit it is facing the wrong way. The tubing isn?t flexible enough, and the list goes on and on. After playing with it for a day I have completely had enough and wish I hadn?t started this project in the first place. However this evening I had a few brain waves that might help, and I only require a few more components. In the mean time, I?m still out of work although trying to learn some networking to improve my knowledge in the area, and hunting for jobs as usual. My graduation is coming up (scary) and I?m not looking forward to that. Oh well, my review of the Icemat Siberia Headset is now complete and can be found on the reviews page. Overall I quite like it, and it means I can Counter Strike late into the night now with sound, yay! ---------- 9/10/2005 @ 12:36 (GMT) I'm getting so lazy with this, *sigh*. On with the life news: Perky is back from her holiday which I'm very glad about, hopefully I'll get to see her soon! Still nothing on the job front, I had a chat with a manager about my skills a week ago but I've heard nothing back so I assume they're not interested in placing me in the short run. Apart from that nothing much has changed, Adam is being more elusive as to meeting up, I have a feeling Maria is keeping him on a shorter chain now, and I've been chatting to a guy called Steve I did my HND with a lot more, he's the one who got me the chat with the manager. On the tech side of things, I'm STILL waiting for AlphaCool to get themselves in gear and sort me out with a water-cooling kit for my next project. Its getting silly now, they've still not shipped anything out for me to play with, and at this rate I'm going to have to turn to someone else to supply the kit. Icemat have shipped me out a set of Siberia headphones which I've been playing with for the last week or so. They're quite good although I don't know if they're worth the money Icemat are asking for them. On the plus side though it means I can now play CounterStrike late night with proper sound - yay! The review will be up soon, Icemat forgot to send me a USB adaptor to go with the headphones so I'm waiting on that. MY kit from America turned up on Monday to my surprise but what a set it was, an AMD 4000+ processor (although the old core that doesn't overclock well), a Leadtek 7800GT and a ECS motherboard (that's going to James). Unfortunately I can't get it all working properly as I don't have the right power adaptors, so I'm waiting on a UPS UK account to get set up to get them from James. I did manage to bench mark it though, 7300 3D05 marks which is very good for stock settings, but initial testing looks like the PSU won't have enough power for everything, not good. Oh and before I forget, you may have noticed the site has changed slightly, I've shrunk it a bit to see how it looks, implementation of the new looks is proving a pain in the arse. Let me know what you think in the shoutbox! ---------- 26/9/2005 @ 23:17 (GMT) My reviews of the Optronix motherboard, OCZ DDR PC3500 Gold GX memory, and Asetek Vapochill Micro are all now published in the reviews section. Enjoy, it'll take you quite a while to read them all! ---------- 25/9/2005 @ 20:49 (GMT) ARG!! You would have thought adding pretty rounded corners to your existing website would be easy. Unfortunately not - as I've spent days and weeks finding out. For the web designers out there, you normally do it with a containing table, and putting the content in the middle. But since I've switched over to CSS I thought I'd try it the CSS way. The idea behind it is very nice, you wrap your content in a corner element, which gets wrapped in a corner element, which gets wrapped...etc, until you have four working corners. The trouble is - you need to use "div" tags, and nothing else will do. This is not a problem if the content does not already use "div" tags, but if it does, the corners trick won't work. I've tried everything and loads of other tags to get it working, but it *HAS* to use "div" from the seems of things, which completely messes up my design. Which sucks, as it looks very nice. (Ooops, I've just noticed I mentioned this in my last blog too!) I'm also trying to add RSS feeds to the blog section of the site, so you don't have to come here to see if a new blog is up! Unfortunately that isn't going well either, so don't expect it any time soon, if ever. Over the weekend I had a LAN party (a computer gaming party for geeks) which was kinda fun, no-where near as fun as the last one I had, but that is probably because it was a last minute rush for me - due to some people not telling me they were definitely coming until the last minute. All in all we got a few hours gaming in though and I'm sure the next one will be better, especially since I'll have the Shuttle LAN rig up and working - and Jen will her own PC, I won't have to worry about it. The Asetek review is done - I couldn't wait for James's board to arrive due to a deadline I hadn't realised I had, so that is just undergoing editing at the moment. ---------- 19/9/2005 @ 22:0 (GMT)
So much to say - I really must update this more often. The Shuttle arrived and has been a complete nightmare. From the BIOS refusing to update (2 days to get it sorted), to memory bandwidth problems (I think its the onboard graphics) its been a complete pain. Also the Crucial memory I got with it failed, although its working again now kind of, so I don't know what?s going on with that. I forgot that I'd done the Optronix motherboard and posted it about a week ago on PlanetAMD64, so look out for that here soon too. And what prompted me to remember the Optronix review? Well as you can see from the picture - it was featured in the Inquirer today! I couldn't believe it, I just stumbled across it accidentally. It just goes to show how PlanetAMD64 is growing, and how popular I am...erm...how good my reviews are..erm...that we're being noticed! The Asetek Vapochill Micro review is coming - but I've decided to wait until I get James's motherboard here, so I can test it properly - which should be in about a week. On the site news - I've been developing a new 'look' for the site. Its all pretty with rounded corners and everything - but the downside is, it will take a major code overhaul to do it. The problem isn't with my code for once - its the four div tags that are required to make the corners work. So if you know an identical CSS tag for div that works in the same way (I've tried most of them) please give me a shout, I?ve got fed up with it for now. ----------
